Posture Problem Treatment in Sturgis
Good posture is about far more than appearance. The spine has a natural S-shaped curve that absorbs shock, distributes body weight, and allows the body to handle the stress of movement efficiently. When that curve is distorted — whether through poor habits, injury, or underlying conditions — the result can be pain, reduced function, and an increased risk of injury over time.
Hyperlordosis (Swayback)
Hyperlordosis, commonly called “swayback,” is an exaggerated inward curve of the lumbar (lower) spine or, less commonly, the cervical spine. It is often caused by poor posture but can also develop from certain diseases or structural imbalances. Swayback shifts the body’s weight distribution abnormally, increasing stress on muscles and ligaments and making them more vulnerable to injury and accelerated wear. Over time, hyperlordosis can lead to a forward pelvic tilt, muscle spasms, stiffness, and chronic low back or neck pain. Chiropractic care for hyperlordosis includes specific stretches and strengthening exercises to restore normal curvature, correct muscle imbalance, and reduce pain and inflammation.
Hyperkyphosis (Hunchback)
Hyperkyphosis is an abnormal outward rounding of the thoracic (mid-back) spine greater than 40 degrees. It can cause back pain, impair mobility, and increase the risk of falls and fractures. While it can be linked to disease or congenital conditions, it most commonly develops from prolonged poor posture and weak spinal muscles. Left untreated, hyperkyphosis tends to worsen over time and can contribute to secondary problems including neck pain and headaches. Chiropractic treatment at Key City Chiropractic & Acupuncture may include spinal manipulation, gentle stretching, therapeutic exercises, mild electrical stimulation, ultrasound, and trigger point therapy — all focused on reducing pain, improving mobility, and slowing degeneration.
Forward Head Posture (FHP)
Forward head posture develops when the head shifts forward from its natural alignment over the shoulders — often as a secondary consequence of hyperkyphosis or from prolonged use of electronic devices. In a neutral position, the head weighs approximately 12 pounds. For every inch it shifts forward, the effective load on the neck and shoulder muscles increases dramatically, potentially reaching the equivalent of over 50 pounds of strain. This places enormous stress on the cervical spine, shortens the muscles at the base of the skull, and can even affect the ability to breathe deeply. Dr. Goebel addresses forward head posture through cervical spinal adjustments to restore mobility, combined with targeted exercises to retrain proper neck alignment and posture habits.
Hypolordosis (Flatback Syndrome)
Flatback syndrome occurs when the spine loses its natural lower back curve, creating a muscle imbalance that causes the body to lean forward and tuck the pelvis in. People with flatback often struggle to stand upright for extended periods and may experience chronic back pain, leg pain, and upper back or neck strain. It can develop from degenerative disc disease, prolonged sitting, or poor posture habits over time. Chiropractic care, including traction and spinal manipulation, has been shown to be a highly effective and cost-efficient alternative to the surgical procedures often used to treat flatback syndrome.
Better Posture for the Long Term
Beyond treating the symptoms and structural changes caused by poor posture, Dr. Goebel helps patients at Key City Chiropractic & Acupuncture develop the habits, awareness, and strength needed to maintain a healthier spine over the long term.
Good posture minimizes strain on the spine and its supporting structures — and the earlier postural problems are addressed, the better the outcome.
